There is the old-school way of doing this upgrade via the admin UI and also the modern way of doing it via the vRealize Lifecycle manager.
In this blog, I’ll do the old school method of doing these upgrades and later will move to 8.10 wherein we can use the vRLSCM method to do the patching/upgrade of our vRealize suites.
We are on vRops version 8.4 and we can go to version 8.10 in one go however we will move it to 8.6 and later use the vRealize Lifecycle manager for the next jump to 8.10.
The first step in this upgrade process is to check the compatibility matrix to figure out if our environment is good for an upgrade. We will use a tool called Upgrade Assessment utility (file Name-APUAT-8.2.0.16931956.pak which is available to download in My.VMware account) to do a precheck of our vRops environment.
Download the Upgrade assessment tool and also the upgrade file from the VMware portal. If you have a cloud proxy in your deployment, ensure you download the upgrade pak with the CP.
Log into vRealize Operations Manager admin UI and navigate to the Software Update tab
Upload the Assessment PAK file we downloaded earlier and Click Next to continue
Wait for the install to complete
Accept the end user license agreement.
Click Next to continue.
Click Install to run the upgrade assessment tool.
The precheck utility will take a while to complete its run and once done, the status will show Completed for all of the nodes on the cluster. Click on Completed to see the pre-update log file.
Validate errors if any.
Once the precheck is done, go to generate a support bundle
Extract the support bundle file and open index.html
Validate if everything looks good
As the prechecks are completed, we will now upload the software update file and repeat the above process. Browse vRealize_Operations_Manager-VA-8.x-to-8.6.0.18741576.pak and then upload it. Continue Next.

Click Next to continue
Click Install.
The installation process may take time depending on your environment size
After a few moments, we can see the cluster transitioning back status
Verify the version in vROPs Manager Management UI
