Part 3 – Add vCenter / Windows Server to Backup Exec 2021

Loading

In this blog, we will now attach our vCenter and Windows Server to our Backup Exec 21. We will use an agentless approach to backup VM’s inside our vCenter. Agent-based backups are typically used when you wish to enable granular restore of database items such as Exchange, SQL, AD etc

1- We will need to create a role group on our vCenter and give the account administrator rights on the vCenter so BackupExec can initiate backup/restore tasks. For this demo, we will just use our administrator account to login

2- Under logon accounts – Choose to Add a new login account

3- I’ve added our vCenter administrator account here

4- Go to the Backup and Restore Tab and choose the option to Add Server

5- We will choose the option to add our vCenter Server

6- Give our vCenter address here

7- Select our login account here.

8- Review the details and click next.

9- Choose the vCenter Server – Right Click and Select Establish Trust

10- Select the servers on which to configure backups

11-Choose Storage as our Backup to disk we created

12- Pick a server from our vCenter inventory to configure backup.

13- The added server will appear here

14- Review the Summary and the job will appear under the job monitor tab

Add Agent Based Servers in Backup Exec

Agent-based backups are typically used when you wish to enable granular restore of database items such as Exchange, SQL, AD etc. The main purpose of an agent-based install is the ability of the agent to quiesce the application and OS states to guarantee an application-consistent backup. Agent backups are favoured in case your VM’s have raw device mappings enabled on them.

1- On the Backup and Restore tab – Choose the option to Add Server

2- Select Microsoft Windows computers and servers and then click next.

3- Select the option to Allow Backup Exec to establish a trust with the servers and then click next.

4- We will now need to Browse the systems we wish to add to Backupexec

5- From our network, we will pick up a few VM’s to backup

6- Select a logon account we created before, this account should be a domain admin

7- Ensure you tick these two options as the server will need to rebooted for agent installs and upgrades

8- Click Install to proceed

9- The Installation will take a few moments to complete and during this process, the VM will reboot
