In this blog we look at filesets, quotas and snapshots on Scale.
If you have worked on Qtree in Netapp, file set is just the same. So, this is just a folder inside a scale system that we can apply quota, inode limits etc. This file set if independent can also be snapshotted.
Enable quotas
Quotas aren’t enabled by default on scale so this needs to be enabled first
Check Quotas are enabled on scale by running
sudo mkdir -p /mnt/finance
sudo mount -t nfs -o vers=4.0 sitea-nfs01.lab.internal:/finance /mnt/finance
Enable Quota
sudo mkdir -p /mnt/finance
sudo mount -t nfs -o vers=4.0 sitea-nfs01.lab.internal:/finance /mnt/finance
Check again
sudo mkdir -p /mnt/finance
sudo mount -t nfs -o vers=4.0 sitea-nfs01.lab.internal:/finance /mnt/finance
Once this is done, go to GUI → Files → Filesets → Create Fileset

Go to GUI → Files → Filesets → Create Fileset

Give it a name – finance

Under Custom Choose the finance path
- Junction path
/gpfs/sitea_prod_scale_fs/finance - Name
finance - Type Independent so it can own its inode space and so it can have snapshots
- Inodes 1,000,000 max / 50,000 allocated
- Owner root:root

The fileset is now ready.

UI creates the file set with 771 perm so we change that to 777 so other users can write it
We’ll chmod 777 on the finance file set
sudo mkdir -p /mnt/finance
sudo mount -t nfs -o vers=4.0 sitea-nfs01.lab.internal:/finance /mnt/finance
Setting Quotas on Filesets
Go to GUI → Files → Quotas → Fileset → Create Fileset Quota

500 MiB soft, 1 GiB hard.

Quota is now enabled on finance folder.

Export the finance fileset or folder
GUI → Protocols → NFS Exports → Create Export:
- path
/gpfs/sitea_prod_scale_fs/finance, - pseudo path
/finance - client
172.16.0.0/16RW, no root squash

Client: 172.16.0.0/16, Read/Write, No Root Squash

Click Create

The folder is now exported

Mount the Export
On sitea-client01 client mounts the export it wants to use:
sudo mkdir -p /mnt/finance
sudo mount -t nfs -o vers=4.0 sitea-nfs01.lab.internal:/finance /mnt/finance
Snapshots
Independent filesets can be snapshotted on their own, which is very easy.
GUI → Files → Snapshots

Pick the finance folder

Create a snapshot rule if needed

Choose the finance folder and Create a snapshot

Snapshot schedule is shown

Restoring from Snapshot
I’ve created some dummy files

Took a new snapshot from the GUI but the snapshots aren’t visible yet in the output

Over NFS, ls .snapshots shows nothing, but each snapshot is still reachable by name
Get the names from the GUI (Files → Snapshots) or mmlssnapshot

To restore the deleted file, it seems we need to pass the whole snapshot path

Just copy the file to finance path
