Managing Password Expiration in NSX‑T

NSX‑T sets a 90‑day password expiration for all built‑in accounts on both the Manager appliances and the Edge nodes. Many people don’t realise this until they log in—especially on Edge nodes—and see a password expiry warning.

Changing a User’s Password Manually

You can update a user’s password directly from the CLI:

vvf-nsx03>
vvf-nsx03> set user admin password
Current password:

Checking Password Expiration

You can check this for admin, audit, or root. To see when a user’s password is due to expire, run:

vvf-nsx03> get user admin password-expiration
Mon Jan 12 2026 UTC 04:48:25.767
Password expires 90 days after last change,
Current password will expire in 90 days.
User will receive warning messages 7 days before password expires.

Disabling Password Expiration

If you want a password to never expire—useful in lab environments—you can clear the expiration setting:

vvf-nsx03> clear user admin password-expiration
# Verify the change:

vvf-nsx03>
vvf-nsx03> get user admin password-expiration
Mon Jan 12 2026 UTC 04:48:52.559
Password expiration not configured for this user.
User will receive warning messages 7 days before password expires.
